Action Plan

Note: If you do not have a safe mailing address, we highly recommend opening an account in person or via phone. Advantis' online application automatically sets your residential address as the primary address, which means you will get mail at your residential address, even if you enter a different mailing address on file.

You can also validate that your mailing address is set to the primary address when your banker calls you for your "onboarding call."

Step 1: Make sure you're in a safe location, using a device your harm doer does not have access to. If you are unsure if your device is being monitored, you can go to Advantis in person (In Person Action Plan), borrow a computer from a friend, or go to public spaces like a library to use a computer.

Step 2: Make sure you have all the required documents/information listed under "Information Needed to Open an Account."

If you're opening an account online, the quickest way to fund your account digitally is through a bank transfer or credit/debit card. Have the routing and account numbers ready from the bank you want to transfer money from OR your credit/debit card information. If you think your harm doer monitors your bank account, consider opening an account in person, or funding your account by cash.

Step 3:  From Advantis home page, clicked on "Open New Account." Select the option to do so online.

Here, you'll receive a message about what information you need.

Step 4:   Select what kind of account(s) you want.

Note that a savings account is required because it's represents your ownership stake of the credit union (e.g. membership).

For checking accounts, you’ll be given the option to have your debit card mailed or picked up at a branch. You can also opt for overdraft transfer from your savings account.

If you think you'll earn more than $10 in interest, this can be a safety concern for joint filers. Read more about this safety consideration and ways to mitigate risk here. You can also call Advantis at the number above and speak to a personal banker about choosing the right kind of account(s) for you.

Step 5:   Select how you want to validate your membership eligibility. Eligibility requirements are listed above.

Step 6:   Continue to fill out information, such as your home address and a preferred mailing address.

You will need the information from a government issued ID, but you do not have to have the physical ID. Inputing the ID number is sufficient.

Step 7:   Continue inputting your information until "Agreement for Online Membership Enrollment." Here, you can check the box at the bottom that says, "I agree that I have the ability to receive disclosures electronically and I consent to receiving such disclosures...."

This will prevent physical mail from being mailed to you, but rather continue communication electronically.

Step 8:   You'll be asked to verify your identity by answering four (4) questions in lieu of verifying your government ID. Questions will vary depending on the applicant and is pulled from government data.

Step 9:   You need to fund your account. The quickest way is by bank transfer or credit/debit card. However, if you think your bank account is being monitored, consider funding by cash by depositing at a local branch.

Step 10:   Click submit and wait for approval! You'll receive an email confirming your application.

Note:   Our customer experience in August 2021 indicated that Advantis got back to the applicant within one (1) business day. The approval email included helpful information such as how to securely log in to your account and how to contact Advantis through a secure portal, should you have sensitive information to discuss. Though a mobile number was provided, Advantis did not make unsolicited calls, but rather communicated via email. They did not run a credit check to open an account.

Advantis also assigned a personal banker to each account. The banker was very responsive and returned customer calls in a timely manner, offering patient and sound advice.

Our customer experience in August 2021 indicated that Advantis sent a hand written "Thank you for opening an account" card to the residential address without prompting. If this is unsafe for you, please call your personal banker and ask them to not send this card.

Step 1: If you suspect that your phone or computer are being monitored, you can trying dropping in to an Advantis location without making a prior appointment. However, they'll only be able to serve you as their schedule allows.

If you're using a safe device, you can call to make an appointment using the number listed above. Pick a location most safe for you out of the branches listed above.

Step 2: Gather all the requirement information listed under "Information Needed to Open an Account" prior to leaving.

Step 3: When you meet with the Advantis banker, they'll walk you through which bank account is best suited to your needs and how to open an account. The banker will make sure you're eligible for membership (requirements listed above) and gather your personal information (also listed above).

Some safety and financial considerations to discuss with your banker can be found here.

Note: Remember to speak to your banker about how you want to receive mail and security measures for the account. If you file joint taxes with your harm doer, consider applying for a no interest bearing account, as interest earned in excess of $10 will require you to report it on your taxes.
